Online Gaming Decorum
2011-07-14 11:22:51The Internet being what it is, when someone plays online games, it is virtually guaranteed that people will offend someone's sensibilities in a small way. In many cases, this can come across as disrespect, bad manners or just a general sense of poor sportsmanship. Some game communities and player bases are more "mature" than others, but even the most established of groups can still have a few that engage in one form of misconduct or another. The anonymity that the Internet affords people tends to allow for a decrease in social niceties - the "Great Internet Fuckwad Theory" and all. Still, in some of the more mature areas, some modicum of "online gaming etiquette" is required.
Be a Good Sport- Bragging your wins and laughing at your opponents do not make you a good sport. If any, it makes you appear as immature and rude. Be humble about your wins. Play it cool. There's really no need for you to rub it in your rival's face. Similarly, don't be a sore loser. Accusing others as cheaters just because they won is obnoxious. You don't just throw accusations without proof. If you lose, then you lose. You just have to accept that although some players are good, others, on the other hand, are better. Practice is the key.
Play Fair- Using foul words only shows your rudeness and brash behavior. It can be similar to playing dirty. As a gamer, you should value the value the significance of a fair fight. Try learning a thing or two from successful players, and try to emulate what they do. If you think the competition doesn't suit up to your standards, you should try looking for a different game instead of playing dirty just to win.
Don't Spam- Spamming can be extremely irritating. It's not polite to flood the chat system with irrelevant messages just to sell an item. If people are ignoring your message, it means they want nothing to do with it. Avoid repeating the same message every other second. If people keep ignoring you, wait for a while so you can try reaching out to a different audience.
You were once a Noob Too- Players use a lot of slang and acronyms when playing the game. Of course, it's impossible for everyone to be familiar with them, especially the noobs or the newbies. Instead of making fun of them and calling them noobs, try to help them out. Put yourself in their shoes. You were once a noob too.
Don't just drop out of the game, particularly when losing. This is considered an act of rudeness and something that signifies being a very sore loser. Even if the team or the player isn't doing well, it is proper for them to finish the game and congratulate the winner. There are legitimate reasons to suddenly pull out of a game, but being the loser is not one of them.
Put in Mind that you're in a Team- If winning really means the world to you, then stop being so self-centered. Exert a little effort to work with your team and function as a group with one goal.
Ignore Insults- It's not the best course of action to insult back when someone says something bad about you. Doing so will only make you look as pathetic as them. Enjoy the Game- Games are supposed to be fun. You don't have to take everything to heart.
